Virtual Training Facilitation Course

Project Summary

A federal government agency needed to prepare facilitators across the organization to deliver virtual courses confidently using Microsoft Teams. The project required a full-day Train-the-Trainer program that included curriculum, activities, teach-backs, facilitator resources, and a complete slide deck.

The Challenge

There was no existing curriculum—only a short “wish list” of topics the organization wanted covered. I needed to turn this loose list into a clear, structured, learner-centered program that would work for a full-day virtual delivery.

The facilitator audience included experienced trainers who were new to virtual delivery, new trainers completing their first instructor certification, and staff with varying levels of experience with Microsoft Teams.

The organization wanted:

  • a practical, skills-based program focused on real application
  • high engagement across 6.5–8 hours of virtual time
  • meaningful teach-backs to assess facilitator readiness
  • no formal Microsoft Teams training included in the session
  • materials aligned with strict internal templates and accessibility guidelines
  • content that respected training fatigue among corrections staff

The course needed to feel friendly, clear, and high-energy, despite the length and the diverse experience level of participants.

My Role

I designed the full course and learning flow from scratch and managed the project independently, creating schedules, coordinating reviews, and ensuring on-time delivery. Working through one primary agency contact, I validated content with SMEs and developed all materials: curriculum, speaking notes, interactive activities, the Trainer Manual, PowerPoint deck, participant resources, and the virtual facilitation checklist. I also completed all revisions and final QA.

Problem-Solving Highlights

Transformed a short wishlist of topics into a clear, logical course structure that made the day easy to follow and easier to teach.

Designed activities that sparked participation, built confidence with virtual tools, and gave participants practical experience using virtual facilitation techniques.

Curated pre-work Teams tutorials to support new facilitators while honoring the client’s request not to include Teams training in the session.

Final Deliverables

  • Course design document
  • Pre-course work package
  • Trainer Manual
  • PowerPoint slide deck
  • Activity handouts
  • Microsoft Teams video resources
  • Virtual facilitation evaluation checklist

Outcome

The training provided a clear, standard approach to virtual facilitation and boosted facilitator confidence. It’s now used across the organization as the foundation for new instructor onboarding.
